When fighting erupts on the playing field, attitudes and behaviors need correction before they intensify into a bad habit or a vengeful rivalry.
Fighting can ensue when players or coaches have false ideas about team expectations. Too often, they take a “win-at-all-costs” mentality too far, thinking winning is what matters most to the team.
The reality is, most student-athletes say they don’t care about wins or losses – they care about their coaches loving them, caring about them, and teaching them.
When coaches and players understand this simple truth, pressure to win is alleviated, and poor sportsmanship is out of the question. Team expectations turn to the positive: Teamwork, Discipline, Respect, Enjoyment of the Game.
